Lately, there has been a lot of talk about the British Virgin Islands and their new stringent protocols for entry into the country starting on December 1, 2020. We all understand wanting to protect a country that has very little in the way of medical facilities to handle covid during this time. We know that the BVI will update their news soon with protocols just for yachts. But in the meantime, we're finding that many clients are just as happy to charter a catamaran, motor yacht or sailboat this winter that can easily sail the waters of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Let's take a look at the catamarans, motor yachts and sailboats available for charters in the USVI.
St. Thomas, St. John, Water Island, and St. Croix:
They may fly the American flag, but "America's Paradise" is, in reality, a mix of the foreign and familiar that offers something for everyone to enjoy. The history, beautiful beaches, myriad activities, great cuisine, and no-passport-required status make the Virgin Islands an inviting yacht charter destination for many Americans. Currently, the USVI is an easy place to travel with fewer covid restrictions for American visitors than the BVI. You can easily choose to do a "USVI Only Charter" with this sample itinerary. USVI Destination Tops the Charts:
The U.S. Virgin Islands are among the most popular destinations, according to Squaremouth with a recent increase of +207% in visitors.
V.I. Dept. of Tourism Commissioner Comments on the Increase in Tourism:
Joseph Boschulte, V.I. Dept. of Tourism commissioner, said the sharp increase in travel to the territory is a testament to the Covid-19 protocols implemented by the local government.
"It goes show what our tourism team and the territory has been doing overall to keep Covid-19 numbers down, which also means that our community is safe relative to many places around the world," Mr. Boschulte said. "It also shows that the American traveler still wants to travel and they're looking to go to places where they feel safe to travel to. And clearly the USVI represents that beacon for many people, and we believe it's the best place to come."
The commissioner confirmed that there will be an increase in airlines arriving at the STT airport. He also congratulated the work the USVI has done in maintaining low coronavirus numbers — which makes travelers feel good about the USVI as their choice. He said that in December the territory will experience flight capacity at pre-Hurricanes Irma and Maria levels. This is an amazing feat for a territory still recovering from the disastrous storms of 2017, and still deep into a pandemic.
Yet even with the positive news, Mr. Boschulte said public health remains a top priority for the government. "We in the Dept. of Tourism along with the governor and the Dept. of Health, still have the public health of the community at the top of our list," he said. "And anytime we see that that becomes a risk, then decisions will be made to ensure that safety remains our top priority."
